In-Home Supportive Services (IHSS) is a statewide program in California designed to provide long-term support to residents who are aged, blind, or disabled and at risk of being placed in a nursing home. To qualify for IHSS, individuals must meet specific criteria, including being eligible for Medi-Cal or SSI/SSP, being either blind or disabled, or being 65 years of age or older. Additionally, they must require personal assistance to safely remain in their homes.
Our Meadows Social Service Coordinator is available to educate seniors on how to access IHSS services. Referrals for these services must be made by the individual’s primary doctor, but they can also be submitted by Adult Protective Services (APS).

care - ca alternate rates for energy
The California Alternate Rates for Energy (CARE) program offers discounts to eligible residents, providing a 30-35% reduction on their electric bill and a 20% discount on their natural gas bill. According to Public Utilities Code Section 739.1, electric companies with 100,000 or more customer accounts in California are required to provide a discount of 30% to 35%. For those with fewer than 100,000 customer accounts, the discount is set at 20%.
At Visalia Senior Housing's Meadows property, we work closely with residents to gather information about eligibility and assist with the application process. We are dedicated to advocating for seniors who need additional help in organizing their requests, ensuring they can take full advantage of this beneficial program.

CSET / LIHEAP ASSISTANCE
Residents of Tulare County who are struggling to pay their home energy bills are encouraged to apply for financial assistance through CSET’s Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP). This program is designed to help low-income community members manage their heating and cooling needs. The goal of LIHEAP is to support those experiencing financial hardship, allowing them to catch up on or stay current with their home energy bills and prevent disconnection of service by their utility company.
Qualified applicants can receive financial assistance once per program year for electricity, gas, or propane services. Eligibility for aid is determined by LIHEAP's income guidelines, the size of the household, the cost of energy, and the availability of funds.

social security benefits
The Social Security Administration's mission is to provide services that adapt to the evolving needs of the public. It is common for the circumstances of a benefit recipient to change after they have applied for or become eligible for benefits. If you or a family member receives Social Security or Supplemental Security Income (SSI), certain life changes could impact your eligibility for an increase in federal benefits. For instance, if your spouse or ex-spouse passes away, you may become eligible for a higher Social Security benefit.
